Causes And Symptoms Of Gynecomastia

  • Gynecosmatia is caused by hormonal imbalances between the male hormone, namely testosterone and female hormone namely estrogen resulting in formation of breast tissues in men. Estrogen is the primary cause of the large breast development and the testosterone being the male hormone. Men secretes certain amount of estrogen in their body, but it is being controlled by the higher testosterone level, preventing any growth of breast tissue in men. If the estrogen level exceeds more than it should be, the hormonal imbalances cause men to develop breasts.
  • Gynecomastia can be seen in newborn babies as well where they can be affected during childbirth by transferring of estrogen from the mother’s body to baby’s one. However, this condition gets clear off with post delivery time.
  • During adolescence the hormone level varies a lot where at least 4 out of 6 teenage boys develops enlarged breast tissues at this phase. But Gynecomastia disappears by itself over the time when one grows up by regaining the balance of hormonal level.
  • In later stage of life men can develop Gynecomatia even as one gets older to their 40’s and 50’s where body starts producing lesser testosterone levels, moreover at an older age, gaining weight can also cause the breast tissue appearance in men that is referred medically as pseudo – gynecomastia.

There are other causes of Gynecomastia including side effects from drugs used for heart disease, excess alcohol consumption deviating testosterone levels, drugs like anabolic steroids or cannabis, Liver/Kidney failure and/or diseases, Infection in the testicles or due to Klinefelter’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder occurring rarely.
